So I'm back from my first 2 weeks in Fairbanks, for those of you who don't know where Fairbanks here is a little map of AK.

I for one don't really like Fairbanks, its not a mountain people kind of town. Its cool in the respect that its really remote but not cool in that fact its flat and a good drive from any mountains. Oh yeah, did I mention is FARGEN COLD.
I've been in some really cold conditions before but prior to this past Saturday I never really knew what -40 feels like, and that is ambient temp, no windchill, the windchill number is so vial I didn't bother to check it after the first day. Do you know what the beauty of -40 is? -40 is where the F and C scales actually meet, so I don't have to convert for everyone else on this board.
After the long drive back to Anchorage (where it was a balmy -5C) it felt great outside. After a few weeks in temps ranging from -23C to -40C, -5C feels like freaking t-shirt weather. After returning to Anchorage I was in the parking lot brushing 2 weeks of snow off the truck bare handed with jacket unzipped and it FELT GOOD.
The scary thing is that I have to return to Fairbanks for another 3 weeks, and the temps are only going to drop. I'm thinking theres probably a good chance I will feel -46 - -50C before the year is done. Its just not right.

I and a fellow ninja used to live in northern manitoba canada where we experienced a lot of similiar weather. Farhenheit was only used in science class back then so it wasn't that magical to us. However i thought it was pretty magical when you would wake up and look at the thermometer and the mercury would not even leave the bulb and the thermometer went down to -50C. we would walk to school in snowmobile suits. memories.

I just noticed this. Things you learn when you live in such towns: mittens are much warmer than gloves, wolf fur is the best for lining the hood of a parka as it is least likely to freeze, if you don't have sneakers in your locker your feet get fukking hot in Sorrels during class and that you can make chad cry if you get him in the face with a snowball in spring
Edit to add that while on the coldest days either snowmobile gear or arctic parkas were still needed, as I moved from grade school to high school at the end of the 80's it was ski gear that came into vogue. I still remember my purple and bright orange Sun Ice ski jacket that I wore with pride down the halls of highschool. Memories.
