welll, my season ended with only 26 days last week. the ACL was weak from some weeks ago on asahidake and I hit a little air.. nothing too noteworthy. iffy landing on a (very)slightly awkward incline and a semi icy snowpack. the ACL just snapped- meniscus needs to be sewn back together and my bones are bruised (or something liek that.. i couldnt understand that part).

so, no the knee didnt explode, but i am done for the year and i needs me some reconstructive surgery. luckily we have a great doc in the area.. and that i have health insurance.

if anyone does still want to come up, I can hook you guys up with a good ski buddy of mine who knows the terrain better than me.

PS- the snow is pretty bitching here, right now. not that i would know.

Sad

I am sorry to hear that CFW,

I am sorry to hear that CFW, the fate we all dread. You seem to be taking it pretty well and obviously in good shape, hopefully you'll bounce back for next season!

well, i should have been takign it easy, I kinda knew it was coming-- skiing too hard. and after i strained the ACL a few weeks ago, I really shouldnt have been skiing 4 days on windblown conditions (last week).

but shit, I had a few great powder days this year, the kind of days that make the season and i will totally remember for years, so no regrets-

just, "what a waste" of February/march snow.

ill have to make a TR with whatever good shots i have soon-

I get where you're coming from. I want this season to go on for ever, but already I've had a season's worth of good times.

Upon returning, they throw them away, trampling them underfoot. As might be expected, this is one of my recollections of the capital.

sorry to hear that bro.

sorry to hear that bro.

this is gonna sound really obvious, but you don't want to walk around with a degenerative knee for the rest of your life. Make sure you get the best care possible even if it means leaving your Japan and scrapping your insurance benefit. If you still have US insurance that works i would seriously consider going back home to have the operation done if you are covered. I'm sure your doctor is good but make sure you understand the procedure you're getting and that you understand why.

this might sound even more obvious, but if my doctor would recommend that you wind down your enthusiasm for skiing after the operation i would definitely consider seeing someone else.

I think the surgery is about $4000 here in Australia vs $20,000-50,000 in the US for the completely uninsured. And you seem like the type of guy who doesn't mind bending ethics around if it means free surgery.

TGR's "gimp central" forum

TGR's "gimp central" forum is the leading source of ACL injury info on the web. Consensus is that a patella transplant the best for long term full recovery to sport. Vibes dude.

dude my season never even got started because of an ACL injury last year- playing Ultimate (the frisbee game) I had surgery end of July and now the knee joint is pretty good now only the muscle mass hasn't returned, its still weak despite my concerted efforts, when the say one year to get back to 100% they aren't kidding.
I can ride bike normally which is some consolation for zero snow days.
I was lucky to find a great sports doc in Kobe who does all the pro sportsmen in the area, Ichiro himself goes to this guy. After being messed over by a complete muppet local doc I found this guy who is the real deal.
Cost me about 600,000 for the op and 4 days in hospital and my budget private insurance refunded that about 95% worth, some trivial things weren't covered. Technically my budget insurance doesn't cover sport, but I wasn't really playing sport at the time, I was chucking a disc with some mates. they don't cover skiing or anything remotely dangerous.
I had hamstring tendon recon.
I bruised my bone too, the first doc put me a full leg cast for 3 weeks because of that, which it turns out was pointless and counterproductive, bone bruise is from a hard impact and the bone itself bleeds from the inside and is sensitive and weak in that spot. Takes a time for it to heal. after the injury when I bent my leg towards a the acl-less knee ment the bones slid a little more than normal and pushed against the bruised part and the pain wans intense.

good luck mate and if you have questions just ask.

hey man thanks for the post-- been slow getting back to you!..

as its looking, I was mistaken and am doing the hamstring recon to... operation date set for the 18th. that dude in kobe is probably way better than my doc haha but as far as things are here, my doc is the best option. apparently someone from sendai came up just for the operation by my doc.. but that just might be promotional gossip. either way, hes as good as it gets for me.

PS- I love ultimate.

Missed that thread. Good

Missed that thread.
Good luck with the ACL, timing-wise you may have a chance to get some next season.
I reckon marriage (congrats) will do more to lessen your time in the pow than an ACL in the long run Smiling.
get well.
