From L-Chicki, to the new burger joint in Hakuba, we at poachninja pride ourself at finding the best in Japanese fast food and Daryl and I may have stumbled on yet another gem between Hakuba and Fujimi (technically on the Chuo between Fujimi and Matusumoto at the Suwako road stop, which is also very scenic). Here you can find the Niku maki (meat roll). Basically it is like an onigiri but round and instead of seaweed it is rapped in shinshu bacon! An onigiri for real men! There is also the option of a cheese topping which they slightly char with a blow toarch ala creme brulle or aburi toro. Very classy.

I have had this. Tasty. And that rest stop is indeed a winner for views. This place is turning into a Japanese daytime TV show, will have to do something this weekend to rectify.

How about something extreme like: after a day at Fujimi, getting drunk and doing a 3am climb of minekata and a decent down #1 course wearing camping headlamps after sculling another half litre of vodka?

That shit was Extreme.
Imagine seeing just a headlamp tumbling down a +50 degree slope for 40 feet... sight of the night, it was beautiful.
My bruises are just starting to show. Probably 1/3 of my leg from the knee down will be black or blue or red by tomorrow.

Ninjaman is claiming there are no wound photos. Somebody prove him wrong.

sounds gnarly. guessing you left ur leg armor at home?

Yah, there was no leg armour or elbow armour at all. I have cuts and bruises on all parts of my body but my legs are the worst. It was one of those falls that I think if I wasn't so drunk it would have actually been worse...
34 days on snow this season 55 days last season
not sure if you remember but there was one main fall (previously discussed) but there was another that rivaled it. Also about 3 others that were just plain fall overs for no reason at all... those were not actually on the trail.
good times.
Awesome.
The funny thing is that the worst bruise/pain of the day was a hit I took to my ankle at fujimi in the day.

Drunk mountian biking in the dark? Now that is crazy!

yes, its strange how some of the dumbest ideas strike you as being TOTALY AWESOME after a half liter of vodka.

The thing is that I am happy I did it. Had I crippled myself 2 weeks before I head to whistler for Momentum ski camp, perhaps I would have regretted it but now that it is over it seems like an "accomplishment", if a dubious one. If I had a "200" list like pinky does on dirtylittlecreatures, I would have something to strike off of it.

TOKYO —
Japan’s first Hooters restaurant and sports bar will open at Tokyu Plaza by Akasakamitsuke subway station on Oct 25 after nearly seven years of negotiations between Hooters Japan and the company’s head office in Atlanta.
Hooters Japan COO Mitsuo Tanabe said the brand’s logo, uniform, menu and ambiance will be the same as back in the U.S., as will the menu of seafood, sandwiches, salads and spicy chicken wings.
As for the famous Hooter girls, Tanabe said the company was not emphasizing the overt sex appeal of the girls, although, “of course, we expect lots of guys to come here to see the girls. It’s not the image of Hooters that we want,” he said. “Instead, we want to emphasize the restaurant’s qualities as being healthy, friendly and hospitable.”
Nearly 400 girls applied for the job and 40 were selected, including 10 foreign girls. One Japanese waitress will be selected to represent Hooters Japan at next summer’s Miss Hooters World Contest in Florida.
Tanabe said Hooters plans to open one store a year in Japan until they have 10. “Somewhere like Ginza or Shinagawa would be good. Roppongi is not at the top of our list. We don’t want to be on the main Roppongi street because then the restaurant runs the risk of attracting the wrong sort of people off the streets. We have to think of the girls’ safety,” Tanabe said.

As the poachninja rep of Atlanta Georgia, I have to say i welcome this hometown classic to Tokyo. I welcome it with open arms. delightfully tacky, yet unrefined.

In adition to AK burger, in the wake of McDonald's departure from Hakuba we now have 2 more burger joints. There is a new one just left of the Echoland roundabout and one at the buggy track near the ski jumps. I had already eaten the "special" double patty AK burger so I did not have the chance to sample but stay posted...

i would also like to add, that although i was initially disappointed with the lack of real burger at Sounds Like Cafe, i am really impressed with the Shinshu Pork Burger and the potato wedges. the pork patty is fine in both texture and taste, with just the right amount of cheese and condiments. It's a delightful alternative to the daily routine of the typical beef hamburger.
To shun the Sounds Like Cafe Shinshu Pork Burger would be a foolish mistake.

I agree, sounds like cafe's burgers are pretty good. first they were a little oily but I wormed up to them. I think there skills are evolving. My only beef is the inconsistent count on potato wedges. When its quiet it seems to be a better count. Other wise 6 wedges doesn't justify the price bump. i do like their style though.
As for the doon buggy burger, pretty sure they've been there all winter. Atleast that sign has been around for some time. Not sure why i have never wondered in. Guess I always thought it was part of the place next door which has been there since I have. Still no excuse. Its been a while since I ate burger that didn't once bark.
