Not sure what the Ninja level of interest is in hiking, but there's a good program coming up this week and next, covering the hike from Tateyama to Okuhotaka/Gendarme. It'll feature the lovely and hardcore Ms Junko Tabei as well.
Only on NHK Tokai/Hokuruku/Nagano:
Sept 4th: 8:00 pm - 8:45pm (part 1) Tateyama - Kumo no Daira
Sept 11th: 8:00 pm - 8:45 pm (part 2) Mitsumata Rengei - Okuhotaka/Gendarme
All Japan NHK:
Sept 23rd: 8:35 am - 9:50 am (part 1 and 2) Tateyama - Okuhotaka/Gendarme
I think the program is a weekly one known as "Kintoku" (Friday Special?) but I'm not sure if it's regular NHK or educational.

Anyone get a chance to check this out tonight? Was only able to see about 10 minutes of it.
FT - NHK puts out most of their stuff on DVD after its been aired. It may cost about 2000 yen but you'd probably score some points with the in-laws if you got a copy for them. Any chance of them putting up a TR from K2?
Ill get some pics they are 68 and 72 so they will only go as high as 6000 meters or a bit. Mom climbed
Manasulu when my wife was 3 years old. Their expedition was pretty important for many reasons.
Mom never went for another 8000 meter peak again after loosing a friend. Papa has gone into the 7000
meter plus range but never wanted to risk an 8000 meter climb. He has climbed almost everywhere.
America, Iran, China, India, Europe, S.A., Nepal etc etc etc.
This was her expedition

1974 On May 4, an all female Japanese expedition makes the summit, becoming the first women to climb an 8,000 metre peak. One climber died on May 5 when she fell between camps 4 and 5.

FT - Just wondering if your mother-in-law knows Junko Tabei (from the NKH program). I'm guessing they're around the same age and were doing 8000m peaks in the same general area around the same time.
Ill ask but they wont be back for 3 weeks.

Bump cause part 2 will be on tomorrow night (in Tokai/Hokuriku/Nagano)
One more bump cause the part 2 that was supposed to be on last week was postponed to this week (tonight) for those in the Tokai/Hokuriku/Nagano areas. And both parts will be broadcast in all of Japan on Wednesday morning.
FT - if your in laws missed it, this will be on again. Part 1 on Nov 13th and Part 2 on the 20th (10 am - 10:50). There's also another hiking program about the Northern Alps on the 3rd at 1 pm.
