My doggiest poach up to

My doggiest poach up to now

I went straight at the door and stuck the sticker while the patrol guy was in.
Just as I put it on the door and moved a few meters back to take the pic, the guy opens the door and asks me:
"what do you want" with the PN sticker next to his face!
I replied "nothing I am just getting ready, to go down" (to take a pic I was thinking)
and he went back in.
I should have asked him to stay there and take a pic of his face with the sticker next to him on the door.
lol

Agreed! although as one of those 5 I can't really complain!

I have a few pics in already, and have a couple spring sites in mind that I think will be my best.

For now though, here's a sign poach taken during this years Castle Rock Extreme at Sugarbush, VT.

"Poaching" avalanche

"Poaching" avalanche infrastructure is pathetic. It is the second time it has happened and has not gone unnoticed - to the extent that I, as a startup guiding company in Hakuba, get asked quite strongly by others in the Japanese guide and avalanche community why I am a member of PN. It reflects poorly on me, so sorry, I'm out. I doubt my future TR's and beta will be missed.

Its too bad you have succumb

Its too bad you have succumb to the "guilty by association" mentality. It is obvious that you need to be part of a more moderated forum where you can be comfortable that the words and actions of others are more controlled. Indeed, it sounds that your new mentality more suitable to Snow Japan where I hope they welcome your new found vision Eye-wink . The rest of us will be fine that this is a FORUM where individual views and opinions will be allowed to be expressed freely.

Edit to add that it is right that we do have a policy to not poach avi signs so as to not promote unsafe behaviour but that was after a pretty blatant "do not enter" sign was covered and then poached. I would have to say that this is different in spirit. Indeed, based on what I have seen at western resorts I am surprised that the sign was not already covered with some kind of stickers

If you are implying in any way that I did something unsafe, I resent it. I was in the Ravine on a moderate day when I put up the sticker, I have also spent much time skiing there on low AND high avalanche risk days. I "poached" the sign because I thought it would be a nice shot for this site/contest. I placed the sticker in such a way that it did not detract from ANY of the important information that is posted there. Then I went skiing. I had the training, knowledge, equipment, and reliable partners that I needed to ski safely on the day that was taken. I did not ski anything that was too steep or wind loaded to be safe on that day. In fact, my buddies and I got to make some nice, low angle fresh turns which is a rare thing on Mt. Washington in mid April! Here's a little stoke from that day. Suck my balls.

Indeed you are exactly wrong. I value a community forum where the actions of others are judged by fellow members, not some controlling team of miserable moderators and their watchdogs, like Snow Japan. In this instance I am choosing to dissociated myself based on the actions of other members - I have made my personal judgement. I don't need majority approval for my actions and am happy the be the odd man out.

I'll post one last TR as a gesture of goodwill.

Beta and TRs missed, but in all honesty a forum free from the supercilious "real backcountry skier" attitude will be a happier place for me and most of the people from the forum I have spoken to.

Wow dude, I always sensed you didn't like me much, but I never picked you for the type to take a shot as the other guy is walking away. It makes you sound like a whiny SJ serf.

As far as I am concerned, I have never cared how much of a 'real bc skier' anyone is. There is something for everyone in the mountains and everyone has a place there. In fact I get a lot of joy helping people who are not regular bc skiers get into the backcountry.

What I have cared about is people who try to generate an internet and closed-world image of being active and knowledgeable bc skiers in front of people who may not know any better. Further more, any discussions I have had on that matter with people who share the same point of view have been off the internet and in the real world.

Regarding the at times chronic mis-use of the word 'backcountry' in Hakuba amongst many gaijins: I know I'm not the only one who questions it, others include residents and international visitors - people who actually walk the talk and have been a little surprised to see how actions have failed to embody the words when they arrive in town. Words have meanings and they should be respected, not used to generate image and business income. All I usually say on this forum is "talk is cheap". And it is. You must hear a lot of it. More happens in this town than I think you would ever realise, judging by the insular club you appear to be a member of. Not everything you know is as it seems.

I don't know why any of this needed to become a drama. I simply said that my association with PN was bad for my reputation amongst a number of people and organisations, some of whom I respect. So I expressed my personal concerns and intention to disassociate myself, I wish I didn't have to. Some people who visit PN even think that the site is mine. That is absolutely wrong, it is not mine. Yet any negative image it generates gets attributed to me.

Aww come on DB, where are

Aww come on DB, where are you going to go where you can rant like this? The truth is that only in a place like this will you be able to express yourself so freely but as a result it is only in a place like this the that controversial actions and words of others will also be present. This is a forum, not a blog, and people can only judge you by what you post. Those that want to associate you with the actions of others within a forum are either ignorant or have an agenda to fukk with you regardless and are looking for any excuse. Fukk, imagine if anyone associated me with all of the actions on TGR?! I could be labled a pornographer (snapper), a criminal (jesse james), a sociopath (ISKIBC), a plagiarist (Beandip4all), amongst so many other things. If people think that you own Poachninja, make it clear that you don't.

As for the avi gate poach, yes, it is against the letter of the new rules but to be honest, it doesn't promote unsafe behavior or cover up any important signage like the original offense did. Also, that it happened in the states, where sticker marketing is far more common (every avi gates in Whistler looks like a collage). As such, I do not think it violates the spirit of the rules, which where put in place to not glorify unsafe behaviour and to not antagonize the local resorts, which are not used to sticker type guerrilla marketing.

You're incorrect to think I

You're incorrect to think I don't like you. Whenever we've met you've always struck me as a nice guy, even if we're not all that similar. But you can be pretty abrasive on the internet - look back through any threads that got acrimonious and chances are you're involved in some way or another, right or wrong.

We all understand your level of commitment to what you do and I'm sure many, including me, are impressed by how far you've taken it, but the fact is that for many it's not necessarily something we'd want for ourselves. Recently you commented that it would be nice if more people gave up their social life or career progression more to get into the mountains - which is a perfectly good sentiment - but I just don't agree. By the end of the season I'll be over 50 days, and for me that was too much, causing me to miss out on some opportunities that I genuinely regret. Similarly, this season has seen some happy events in members of the "insular club" that require a balance between skiing or any other "selfish" activity and time given to others. I certainly wouldn't want to have people miss out on these experiences, nor do I want to miss them myself.

I'm sure your devotion to what you do is why you have managed to form some great relationships with people in Hakuba, who presumably wouldn't be there if they didn't have a mindset that overlaps to some extent with your own. Definitely great to have found a niche in only 2 seasons.

But the fact is that I and not a few others here are just hobbyists, if keen ones, and are quite happy with that. Maybe what is going on in Hakuba outside of our group of friends isn't of much interest, and how things "really are" interests us about as much as state politics in Alabama, no matter who we hear it from. So when you start talking about how you "don't see many bignoses in xxxx area" or "while you were doing xxxx, REAL backcountry skiers were doing this", you're not really impressing anyone. Have your fun, because we are most certainly having ours, however it measures up on somebody else's yardstick. Whatever your intention, comments like those come across as sneering, and I think most people find it pretty boring by now.

Anyway, it doesn't really matter now and of course you are free to ignore all this. It's not really worth getting worked up over.

Ninjaman - I agree with you,

Ninjaman - I agree with you, but regardless I have to let it slide for the time being.

kingofmyrrh wrote:
etc etc threads that got acrimonious etc etc

Whats going on in your head? I've done little here in this thread to merit your posts. Seems you have a bee in your bonnet and taking the easy pot shot at me, I'm one of the softest targets out there to set up as the nasty guy. In the past very gutless people have enjoyed doing just that. I'm surprised that you are. I had no drama here until you came and started providing it. Yet casual observers will again think 'here goes damian, being a jerk once more'.

At least you have the guts to speak up, despite coming across as quite hypocritical with your eagerness to throw poorly veiled insults. Further, considering the quote, you sure are giving it a pretty good go at leading me into another one - and getting way off topic in your effort to do so. Indeed you are now casting a much, much wider net than you did in your original assertion relating to "real backcountry skier attitude". You are now going on about myself, my commitment, my wishes for Hakuba and the commitment of more ski bums in town, what I do, past conflict etc etc. Those topics have got nothing to do with your original statement nor this thread.

Seems you had a little pow-wow recently with your buddies and have decided that you are all tired of my doing the things that you pointed out. I've kind of addressed that in a PM I sent you.

As for trying to impress anyone with commenting that I don't see any foreigners in many places I go, you are wrong, I'm not trying to impress, but it sounds like I fucked up and came out looking like a dick. That's too bad, but I'll cop it and take it as mine.

... the rest I sent to KoM in a private message as it has nothing to do with this thread and although some people who are not members here would love to see it said in public at the expense of a key person, I wont put it on display. Sure, I'd like to defend myself in public, as that is where the accusations where leveled. But that would be acrimonious of me.

Anyway, thanks for the love KoM, I wont forget it. It was you who brought the acrimony to this thread and took it way off topic. Hypocrite.

Which all made me laugh.

Sorry if my "poach" was responsible for stirring up all these bad feelings within your community.

Sounds like the resorts in Japan are pretty strict?

Too bad for you.

I've enjoyed this contest throughout this season, and have put some thought into my sticker placements.

Now that there has been an extension I still have a couple more stickers, so we shall see where they end up.

Maybe I can cause some more controversy! Eye-wink

Is there a new ending date, or just sometime this summer?

Actually, things were getting a bit staid for a bit and I am glad you stirred us up. Thanks for the poach shots throughout the season.

As for the timing, we haven't decided yet but it will be before the northern hemisphere season starts so as to get the skis out to the winner.

WOW!! Amazing! Thank you guys so much!!!

I really enjoyed this contest, and had fun thinking of different ideas on what to poach throughout the season!

I think the concept behind your site is really cool, it seems like I have been ducking ropes and dodging ski partol almost as long as I have been skiing, and to see a community that is based around the idea of going out and getting the goods no matter what is awesome!

Not being Japan based I haven't found too many opportunities to contribute to these forums aside from this contest, but I will certainly try to stay active here in the future, and post some TR's on the PN Lhasa's once the season starts!

As for future / summer poaches, I haven't gotten the one I had in mind yet, but it will be coming. I have three or four more stickers, and will continue to post pictures as I poach!!!
