Poach Ninja Code of Conduct

Poachninja was born out of the void of good, spirited ski information and networking in Japan. Free thought and free speech was either being stifled by the established media here in Japan or overwhelmed by the volume of information on the international sites. The community spoke (freely) and the result was Poachninja.com. We modeled our rules on TGR- which basically meant there were no rules but we did put into our manifesto important points of responsibility.

I believe that we have done well to adhere to our manifesto but I think we underestimated Poachninja's success. Talking to admin and some of our members involved in the Japanese ski industry it is becoming apparent that awareness of Poachninja.com is much wider than the core gaijin riders who were the original target. We have, if you will, a much wider audience than I originally envisioned especially in such a short while. As such, it is important that we consider this audience when posting. Unlike TGR, we are very geographically concentrated and it is more difficult to be anonymous so it is best we do as much as we can not to disturb the neighbors.

Before I go on, I would like to state that I still would like to adhere to the concept of free speech that forms the core of our community. I would only like to suggest this code as a list of manners to help us get on with our neighbors which include the Japanese ski industry on which some of us rely on for their living.

Firstly, no there should be no selling or soliciting the sale of non-transferable ski-passes on Poachninja.

Second, please do not sticker poach signs that are to do with safety, like avalanche warning signs. Goofy ingrish, out of bounds lift towers, gondola ceilings, lifty bottoms etc are still fair game.

Thirdly, try to keep OTB slack country TRs locations vague. "Hakuba Sidecountry" is enough. My recent TR, for instance, should have been edited to obfuscate the prominent buildings.

Again, these are only suggestions and this is a community. Feel free to suggest more or disagree with my suggestions but try and be constructive. If you disagree please explain why. At the end of this I would like to have a good code of conduct.

I'm pretty sure that racism will police itself. I don't believe anyone on here is going to tolerate that much ignorance. As far as the anti-homo stuff... you're a fag!

edited because I'm retarded

Should the thing about

Should the thing about captions being placed above photos (as opposed to below) be mentioned in this sections as well, or has this not been formally decided yet?

The vague TR detail is a bit

The vague TR detail is a bit rough, isn't it? It will create yet another "in crowd" situation and promote the attitude embodied in FT's famous "if you don't know where it is, you're not good enough to ride it". Not having a go at you personally FT, just the exclusivity that that attitude suggests. IMHO abstract snow porn is interesting for only so long, without meaningful beta it gets pretty tired especiallyif it is the same bunch of guys swapping photos of themselves on the snow over and over again.

Also how does the vague TR detail fit with the Wiki feature (which is a great idea, BTW) on here?

It only need be vague when

It only need be vague when it is "poaching". All legit in bounds and BC stuff is fine to put up the location to.

FT is like a lot of people

FT is like a lot of people in that he prefers to keep the goods to himself, which is fine. He just doesn't want a bunch of gapers to come in and make sh1t turns down lines he wants to ski (and shoot photos of). Personally I don't think it makes too much of a difference at the moment but as Japan and its side and back-country get more popular there will be a lot more people with that attitude. Competition for the goods will breed it. Take a look at TGR's TRs, the locations are almost always vague. We actually had a debate about this earlier with guys like SNP DB and myself happy to share on the interwebs but others like Shinobi, FT, and (now) Daryl much opposed. We decided that the best compromise is to keep sidecountry poaching shots vague while the back country was fair game. If, however, a poster like FT (or anyone else) decides not to post the locations of BC TRs that is up to him.

This is another topic, and

This is another topic, and its already been discussed. But really, those who are most protective also do the least touring. Believe me, there is no competition for the goods out there. Most people doing the protecting wouldn't even know where the goods really are, or at least never go there.

I also think gapers are free to ski where ever the hell they want, whether a few local gaijins and seasonal visitors agree or not. I'd rather more gapers giving it a go and less 'core crew' talking cheap on forums and seldom actually walking the walk. I sure as hell never see them out there.

Back to the topic: As for not openly advertising resort poaching, agreed, it is a bad idea (but then I don't support resort poaching in the first place).
