Yesterday KoM and I were hiking up Goryu Dake when hit by a surprise winteresque snowstorm. The snowpack went to ice fast and and we aborted the summit. The precip was only high in the alpine so we didn't hit rain while descending but, according to one report I got at the petrol station this morning, such was not the case in other parts. It seems like rain caused big wet slides on Daiseiki yesterday and at least one person needed to be brought out via heli rescue (no update on status). With more rain in the forecast it is a good time to remind ourselves that there still is risk out there.

I heard from le wife that 10

I heard from le wife that 10 people were taken out by a slide in haks. But info from her would have likely come from the news on TV so who knows what the reality of it was.

When you say you were hiking up Goryu Dake, does that mean you guys were up at the peak? or on you way there? You guys ski Goryu is what I be asking?

Talking to Rappie it sounds

Talking to Rappie it sounds like there were 2 bodies recovered but the slide may have taken a lot more than that as there seems to be more than 2 backpacks recovered.

We did not summit Goryu. When the weather went to shit we aborted and skied back down the trail we came up. So much for the forecast of sun all day. For us, the issue was poor vis and a snowpack that had turned to sheet ice, not so much wet slides. There were other mountaineers on the mountain (very few skiers) and all but one hunkered down in their tents and the solo guy who went on could soon be seen to be downclimbing later.

What boggles the mind was the traffic going up the following day. I was in 47 Park but we went up to take a look at Goryu as there was a bit better visibility and there were still mountaineers pressing on. Given that it was obviously raining in the higher alpine and you could see large wet slides from over night, I don't know what they were thinking.
