for those who speak the lingo.... JAN's SC & ASC (equivalent to RAC) is on offer this winter (i intend to dress like mamabear and attend the all ladies course on 2/21 - i have an extra mamabear costume btw). The website doesn't say where JAN Level 1 will be held for all those interested in the full taco.

I think the JAN/CAA Level 1 was fully booked out quite some time ago.
It is held in Hakuba and has Canadian instructors.
Correct - we tried getting our patrol on the translated CAA Operations Level 1 held in Hakuba, but it was already booked up on the second day of accepting applications. Is it fair to assume that JAN's SC is the equivalent of CAA AST-1, and JAN's ASC is the equivalent of CAA AST-2?
I dont know what SC nor ASC means?
But JAN's Level 1 is the exact same course as the CAA Level 1. In fact it is thought by CAA instructors.
Note: the CAA level 1 is not a recreational avalanche course such as RAC or ARAC.
Oops, I now looked at the dates and see that the above listed SC's (safety courses) are separate to the Level 1.

my plan is to sneak off to whistler from jan 29 to feb 9, and take both caa ast-1 and ast-2 with canada west mtn school. my idea is to get the basics down solid rather than jumping straight into caa ops level 1. i know jan has the sc and asc courses in japan, but i figure i will get a lot more out of it if i take these courses and study all the materials in english.

It looks like RAC and ARAC no longer exist (or at least they are not offered by CAA or CAC). These are now AST-1 and AST-2 and are offered by the CAC (not the CAA - they do the Level I). It looks like JAN is replicating these with SC and ASC. Just to confuse things further, the American's (AIARE) call these Level I and Level II.
So, In summary (without getting into which is more desirable):
RAC = AST-1 = SC = AIARE Level I
ARAC = AST-2 = ASC = AIARE Level II
CAA Level 1 = JAN Level 1 = NZ Level 1 = AIARE Level III = AAA AVPRO

changed plans to save a load of time, although it will be later in the season... will do ast 1&2 in english in hakuba with evergreen on mar 14-18. any takers?
Assuming I can take leave, I will meet/see you there Soprano.
I'd love to take the course then if I can't take it earlier. I'm still trying to understand what's available through JAN and I can take it earlier I will. Otherwise, I will confirm with work and try to get off then.
Is anyone taking anything earlier? I need to go for the most basic cources. SNP, you sign up?
dude. i'm taking NZ Level 1 this summer instead given my geographical handicap.
there's a beer on offer if you want to come down here to join me. http://www.poachninja.com/forums/weather-and-snowpack-forum/nz-level-1
