Norikura/Cortina

Norikura & Cortina are a bit further north from Hakuba's major resorts up the 148 highway. Both resorts (and the associated backcountry and sidecountry are entirely below treeline, so worth checking out if the viz has shut down the alpine.

Norikura Backcountry

Wakaguri - A spot generally used by the guiding ops around Hakuba as the hike in / hike out aren't too difficult and buying the single ride booklet of 10 lift rides for Y3000 is a cheap way to access the goods. From the top of the #3 Chair at Norikura resort, the hike in to the peak marked on the map (n.b. this peak lies in the wakaguri area at the top of Norikura resort, but is not the peak of Hakuba Norikura mountain, a nearby higher summit) took me about 1 hour (400m vertical) and isn't too steep. You get a nice, steep 400-500m descent through perfectly spaced trees. The exit dumps you at a dam at the Kurokawa River which should be tracked out to take you back into the Norikura resort (head SE along the river if there is no tracks out until you see the lifts).
